Help Barclay Friends Recover Replace Restore

Just a word of thanks for the support, the kind words, the wisdom, the caring, the collaboration and the patience as the situation with Barclay Friends is evolving. Simply put, the Barclay Friends tragedy is numbing. And the question of how to reach out effectively and help has, in the short term, been difficult to answer.

The first priority has been to address the needs of Barclay Friends’ residents. We can report to you that efforts in that regard have been extraordinary. The staff of Barclay Friends is working as quickly as possible to help meet basic immediate needs—from placement in other locations to medical care to clothing and other possessions. Local generosity shown to Barclay Friends’ displaced residents has been amazing.

In the meantime, there is still an incredible amount of work ahead to better understand how best to put Barclay Friends back together again. In the short term, all funds will be restricted for fire relief efforts to benefit displaced residents as well as efforts to restore operations to the skilled nursing community.  When we know more about our long term needs, funds may be used to help rebuild.

A Spirit of Caring

Barclay Friends began with a gift and for more than 120 years, has provided an environment that preserves the dignity and vitality of older adults.  We are and always have been a non-profit organization.  All of our funds are devoted to improving the lives of one of society’s vulnerable populations.  Through the generosity of donors, we are able to ensure continued care at Barclay Friends for many residents who have outlived their resources.  Likewise, the philanthropic support of the West Chester community enabled us to make the transformational move to Franklin Street and establish the Horticultural Therapy Program.

Heart in Hands

The Caring Fund

Because of the support from generous donors, Barclay Friends has never asked a resident to leave because he or she has exhausted his or her financial means.
