Voluntary Assignment

One of the many ways that older adults can help others while helping themselves is to volunteer their time and energy to those who need them.  Not only does volunteering greatly benefit ill others, it also helps boost the mental acumen of those doing the volunteering.  It has been found that those who begin volunteer work in their middle years and continue in their mid-seventies have better mental health than those who have never volunteered.

In addition, volunteers have been found to have added social and emotional resources upon which to draw since they have an expanded social network.  There is little question that volunteering provides additional meaning and significance later in life.
