October 15, 2019 —If you have always wanted to learn to play a musical instrument, maybe it is time you took some lessons—you’re never too old to learn to play an instrument. In the process, you may not only satisfy your need for self-expression and pleasure, but you may also likely improve your mood and mental function. Just as lifting weights builds muscle, learning to play an instrument challenges the brain to build new neural pathways and connections. In fact, it has been found that older adults who have taken just six months of piano lessons display better executive function and working memory. Playing an instrument also presents a good intellectual challenge because it requires that skills be maintained and improved.
