At Barclay Friends, we are dedicated to more than just exceptional care for residents—we are committed to creating a sustainable, eco-friendly environment that benefits both the community and the world around us. Our focus on sustainability is evident in every aspect of our operations, from the food we serve to the energy we conserve.
Sustainable Practices at Barclay Friends 🌱
Sustainability is at the core of what we do at Barclay Friends. Our efforts are comprehensive and integrated into daily life at our community.
Farm-to-Table Dining
We prioritize fresh, locally-sourced ingredients in our meals. This not only ensures that our residents enjoy healthy, delicious food, but also supports local farmers and reduces the environmental impact of food transportation.
Energy Conservation
Our commitment to energy efficiency is reflected in our automated HVAC and lighting systems, which are designed to reduce our carbon footprint. By optimizing energy use, we contribute to a more sustainable future while maintaining a comfortable environment for residents.
Recycling Programs
Barclay Friends has implemented comprehensive recycling programs that cover everything from electronics to fabrics. These initiatives help minimize waste and encourage a culture of reuse throughout our community. Explore recycling best habits.
Horticultural Therapy: Growing Together 🌸
Gardening is more than just a pastime at Barclay Friends—it’s a vital part of the residents’ daily lives. Our full-time horticulture therapist works closely with residents to plant a variety of spring flowers and summer vegetables.
What makes our horticultural program unique is its focus on giving back to the community. Many of the vegetables grown in our gardens are donated to the Chester County Food Bank, providing fresh, healthy produce to those in need. By avoiding pesticides and herbicides, we ensure that our gardens remain a self-sustaining and healthy environment, featuring koi ponds, raised garden beds, and serene gazebos. Therapeutic Gardening: Nurturing Body and Soul
At Barclay Friends, gardening is a therapeutic experience that offers numerous benefits. For residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, our sensory stimulation garden provides a safe space where they can cultivate and nurture plants, fostering a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Gardening has been shown to offer physical, emotional, and psychological benefits, making it an essential part of our holistic approach to care.
Celebrating Earth Day Every Day 🌍
Sustainability is a year-round commitment at Barclay Friends. We celebrate our planet daily through a variety of activities designed to educate and engage residents.
Our Arbor and Earth Day Seeding Program is a highlight of the year, where residents participate in planting and learn successful food production methods. These activities, along with trivia games and educational videos, help reinforce the importance of environmental stewardship.
Recycle, Reduce, Reuse: A Community-Wide Initiative
Our approach to sustainability goes beyond the garden. We encourage composting yard and food waste, recycling electronics, and repurposing worn fabrics for crafts. These practices are embraced by the entire Barclay Friends community, creating a shared sense of responsibility for our environment.
🌿 A Commitment to Giving Back: Over 160 lbs of Fresh Produce Donated
This year, Barclay Friends proudly donated over 160 lbs of food to the Chester County Food Bank. This significant contribution was made possible by the dedication of residents and volunteers, who work tirelessly in our gardens throughout the growing season.
Linda P., a dedicated volunteer and former staff member, reflects on her experience:
“Since I retired from Barclay in 2021, I wanted to continue to support Barclay Friends by volunteering. I enjoyed having a garden at Barclay while I worked and thought I could continue gardening by helping with the Food Bank Garden. It’s great knowing what we harvest goes to the local residents who might not be able to have a garden themselves. Each year we try to outdo last year’s totals! Cheryl is a great mentor and supportive to me throughout the season.”
