Barclay Friends Welcomes Emily H. Wells to Board of Directors

WEST CHESTER, Pennsylvania — Barclay Friends (A Kendal Affiliate) announces the appointment of Emily H. Wells, MSS, to the Barclay Friends Board of Directors. Wells brings decades of experience in clinical social work, public service, and nonprofit governance, along with a deep commitment to community well-being.

Wells is a licensed clinical social worker with an extensive professional background supporting children, families, veterans, and adults with complex mental health needs. Her career includes leadership and clinical roles in public school systems, state child welfare services, community mental health organizations, and residential programs serving individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.

In addition to professional experience, Wells has been actively engaged in volunteer and governance work. Since 2014, she has volunteered at Thorncroft Equestrian Center in Malvern, Pennsylvania, supporting therapeutic riding programs for adults and children with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Her service there has included roles as a barn manager, instructor assistant, and co-facilitator of equine-based programming for veterans. Wells also served on the Thorncroft Equestrian Center Board of Directors from 2017 to 2025 and currently serves on The Welcome Society of Pennsylvania Council.

Wells holds a Master of Social Service in Clinical Social Work from Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research and a Bachelor of Arts from Earlham College. Her work has consistently emphasized collaboration, dignity, and respect for individual strengths; values that align closely with the mission and practices of Barclay Friends and the Kendal System.

“Emily’s professional background and long-standing dedication to service reflect the values that guide Barclay Friends,” said Ellen Gilbert, Board Chair. “Her perspective will be an important asset to the board.”

Wells lives in Edgmont Township, Pennsylvania, with her wife, Susan, on Susan’s family farm, where they share life with five dogs, three cats, and two horses. A lifelong horse enthusiast, Wells remains actively involved in equine care and therapeutic horsemanship.
