Maria Kiwagama: A Dual Master’s Journey and Prestigious Achievements in Healthcare Leadership
Maria Kiwagama is one of 33 distinguished recipients of a prestigious scholarship this year. As she embarks on her journey of pursuing a dual master’s degree in Nursing Leadership and Healthcare Administration, she reflects on her decision: “In 2019, when Wilmington University introduced a dual degree program combining nursing with business administration, I saw an opportunity to blend my nursing skills with business knowledge. Understanding healthcare operations, cost management, and innovative solutions is crucial for addressing the complexities of today’s healthcare.”
In 2023, Maria’s dedication to professional growth led her to secure the PADONA Leadership Development Program Scholarship. This achievement culminated in her certification as a Director of Nursing in Long Term Care (CNDLTC). With support from LeadingAge PA and Barclay Friends‘ tuition reimbursement, Maria is set to complete her dual master’s degree by December 2024. “I aimed to minimize additional student loans by seeking scholarships. Thanks to this award, I am on track to finalize my degree and graduate,” she added.
Moreover, Maria’s drive is fueled by her vision for the future of healthcare. “Balancing resident care with operational efficiency is crucial. My goal is to earn my Nursing Home Administrator License next year and leverage my knowledge to enhance care for the aging population,” she explained.
Why This Matters
As the U.S. population ages, the need for skilled healthcare leaders becomes increasingly urgent. By 2034, older adults are expected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history. Furthermore, by 2030, all Baby Boomers will be 65 or older. This demographic shift underscores the importance of having well-prepared leaders in the healthcare sector to navigate the evolving needs of older adults.
