Barclay Friends’ mission is to provide a continuum of services to older adults, with a focus on compassion and kindness, excellence, and continuous improvement. For a quarter century, one team member has not only embodied these qualities, he has also dedicated his life to them: Suliaman ‘Wasco’ Sankoh.
Originally, from Sierra Leone, Wasco immigrated to the United States 25 years ago and began his first job in this country with Barclay Friends. Since then, he has remained an essential part of the team, helping to shape the community while living the mission every day.

“For 25 years, Wasco has been a steady and compassionate presence at Barclay Friends,” shared Maria Kiwagama, Director of Nursing. “He’s deeply trusted by his team, and his attention to detail has left a lasting impact on both residents and their families. Many have shared personal stories with me about how Wasco consistently goes above and beyond to prioritize their needs.”
Wasco originally began his career as an aid, supporting the team as they cared for residents. Through personal and professional support from our affiliate Kendal, Wasco went to school to earn his Certified Nursing Assistant’s (CNA) credential. “I feel a lot of loyalty because of that,” said Wasco. “Why would I go anywhere else?”
Over the years, Wasco has helped connect others to career opportunities at Barclay Friends. He encouraged several of his friends and family from Africa to join the team, and many of them have gone on to serve for several decades themselves. “It’s like a big family here,” he said when asked why he continues to come to work every day.
Wasco describes his work as a CNA as “hard” and “challenging,” and says patience is essential. But the reward, he explains, is the privilege of working with older adults who have lived full lives and achieved so much. “They are human beings. They have walked this earth for so many years,” he says, “and they deserve kindness and respect. One day, I will be that age too.”
Outside of work, Wasco finds joy in swimming. “I’ve done it ever since I was a small boy. It’s exercise, but it also connects me back to Africa.”
On July 11th, 2025, Wasco celebrated his 25th anniversary at Barclay Friends. His story serves as a testament to perseverance, humility, and the enduring impact one person can have within a community. “Thank you, Wasco,” said Kiwagama, “for your unwavering dedication and the meaningful difference you continue to make every day.”
