Welcome to Barclay Friends

Barclay Friends, an affiliate of The Kendal Corporation, provides residential living, personal care, long term nursing care, and post-acute rehabilitation in a state-of-the-art community in the borough of West Chester.  Barclay Friends is dedicated to continuing to improve the care of the aging in the wider community.

Basic Quaker values are reflected in the manner of care we provide. We strive to honor the spirit, uniqueness, and basic rights of each older person. We respond faithfully to the needs of older people: the need for independence and self determination, the need to feel connected, and the need to have opportunities for learning, fun, reflection, and self expression. The Kendal affiliates' Values and Practices further explains our values and the spirit of community at Barclay Friends. While guided by the values of The Kendal System, each Kendal affiliate maintains an independence that fosters creative thinking.

Barclay Friends' innovative cluster design promotes a residential feeling while reinforcing the resident's orientation and a sense of belonging. The design features four "communities," one dedicated to residential living and personal care and three to skilled long-term care nursing and post-acute rehabilitation. Each have their own common space and service space, plus access to central areas and amenities. Design organized into "communities" promotes informal social interaction and sharing of resources.

Easily accessible common spaces invite residents at every level of care to join Barclay Friends' life in a natural, self-determined manner. Common areas include an activity room, two dining rooms, an occupational and physical therapy center, salon/barber shop, laundry room, administrative offices, and outdoor gardens. Services and amenities are centralized and are readily accessible to family members, to staff, and to residents of all capabilities.
